Summary

Make every moment with your child count。 Tap into the psychology behind your child's behavior at every stage of development, and respond with confidence。

Find out what your child really means when he says "Look what I did", "But I'm not tired," or "You're embarrassing me," and discover what's really going on when he can't express himself at all。

Using more than 100 everyday scenarios, the book leads you through each one step by step, explaining not only your child's behavior and the psychology behind it but also your own feelings as a parent。 It then gives instant recommendations for what you could say and do in response to best resolve the situation。

Covering all your child's developmental milestones from ages 2 to 7 years, What's My Child Thinking? covers important issues, such as temper tantrums, friendships (real and imaginary), sibling rivalry, aggressive behavior, and peer pressure。 There's also a bank of practical "survival guides" for critical times, such as traveling in the car, eating out, and going online safely。

Rooted in evidence-based clinical psychology and championing positive parenting, What's My Child Thinking? will help you tune in to your child's innermost thoughts and be the parent you want to be。

What's My Child Thinking is a fantastic book to help understand children and the ways that they think through hundreds of examples of scenarios that anyone who's been around children will have heard before。 The book begins with some information on how children's brains develop and milestones they achieve under four categories, thinking, relating, feeling and doing。 I found this very interesting and it's a great way to get you to start thinking about how children are still growing and developing What's My Child Thinking is a fantastic book to help understand children and the ways that they think through hundreds of examples of scenarios that anyone who's been around children will have heard before。 The book begins with some information on how children's brains develop and milestones they achieve under four categories, thinking, relating, feeling and doing。 I found this very interesting and it's a great way to get you to start thinking about how children are still growing and developing however grown up they can sometimes seem and it shows just how amazing the brain is。 The main part of the book is split into three sections, 2-3 years, 4-5 years and 6-7 years。 This makes it very easy to find what's relevant for your child but I have found that some of the older examples still fit for scenarios of younger children and sometimes a few scenarios may be similar。 With the contents and the 'see related topic' on each page it makes the book really easy to navigate if not reading from front to back, a great way to dip in and out the book。 The scenarios are brilliant and the children's quotes are things I've heard so many times before which makes it really handy as you know you've come across these sayings or scenarios before and will come across them again with some of the more common ones being "I'm telling", "that's mine", "I didn't do it", "you can't come to my party" etc。 There's also lots of less common scenarios but ones that are harder to talk about like a page on death, terrorism, lack of self esteem and social hierarchies。 The way these pages are laid out makes the book really easy to read with speech bubbles showing what the child said and what you're both thinking on each page along with how to respond at the time and in the long term。 These short paragraphs on each section are straight to the point which is good and they really make you think from the child's perspective which will help children in the long term when they are being understood better。 The parents survival guide double pages throughout the book are great to help children through some more difficult times or topics like separation and divorce, school pressures, moving home etc。 I also really like the 'route to follow' sections as it makes you more aware that there are often triggers to some behaviours。 I found the lie page particularly interesting as I'd never considered anti-social and pro-social lies and their differences。 I think a lot of the time we think of what children say as literally what they mean but when we consider they are still learning and developing we can understand that they often say one thing but mean another, they just haven't found the words to explain that other thing yet or are worried about the reaction they'll get。 This is why I think this book is brilliant as it gets you thinking from the child's perspective and with this they can be helped to grow, learn and control their emotions and with a better understanding of children's thoughts and feelings we are all happier。 This is a fantastic book that is easy to read and has made me think more about the way children see things and I have found very useful, worth a read by anyone who has or spends time with children。 。。。more

I found this book very helpful, and I liked the format a lot。 I may come back to it again for a refresher in a couple of years。 Recommended for parents of children aged 2-7。 I even found some helpful tips for my 8 year old。

If you are looking for a quick survival guide for the complicated moments of childhood and parenting, I highly recommend this book。 I feel like the authors eavesdropped on the parenting conversations I have in all of my friendships and then solved all of our problems in this book。This book does exactly what it says it does in a simple and organized format with a beautiful layout。 If you are looking for an in-depth look at child development or developmental psychology, this is not the book for yo If you are looking for a quick survival guide for the complicated moments of childhood and parenting, I highly recommend this book。 I feel like the authors eavesdropped on the parenting conversations I have in all of my friendships and then solved all of our problems in this book。This book does exactly what it says it does in a simple and organized format with a beautiful layout。 If you are looking for an in-depth look at child development or developmental psychology, this is not the book for you。 It is exactly what it claims to be。 This would make a great gift for any parent to be。 It will likely take a special spot on their bookshelf and be referenced many times! One of my favorite quotes was, "We can never go wrong by reaching first for empathy。" We will all be better parents if we take this to heart。 The publisher provided an ARC through Netgalley。 I have voluntarily decided to read and review, giving my personal opinions and thoughts 。。。more

Really good book, every possible child's thought is described from his and parent's side。 For every situation there is list of do's and dont's。 Very interesting and hopefully useful:) Really good book, every possible child's thought is described from his and parent's side。 For every situation there is list of do's and dont's。 Very interesting and hopefully useful:) 。。。more

Read through ages 4-5Loved the differences in family member color (multiracial kids are definitely depicted), but they missed an opportunity to show differences in size/body type of parents and when both parents were shown with kids, it was always a Mom and a Dad with no room for ambiguity

I received a DIGITAL Advance Reader Copy of this book from #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 ttttttFrom the publisher, as I do not repeat the contents or story of books in reviews, I let them do it as they do it better than I do 😸。ttttttMake every moment with your child count。 Tap into the psychology behind your child's behaviour at every stage of development, and respond with confidence。Find out what your child really means when he says "Look what I did", "But I'm not tired," or "You I received a DIGITAL Advance Reader Copy of this book from #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 ttttttFrom the publisher, as I do not repeat the contents or story of books in reviews, I let them do it as they do it better than I do 😸。ttttttMake every moment with your child count。 Tap into the psychology behind your child's behaviour at every stage of development, and respond with confidence。Find out what your child really means when he says "Look what I did", "But I'm not tired," or "You're embarrassing me," and discover what's really going on when he can't express himself at all。Using more than 100 everyday scenarios, the book leads you through each one step by step, explaining not only your child's behaviour and the psychology behind it but also your own feelings as a parent。 It then gives instant recommendations for what you could say and do in response to best resolve the situation。Covering all your child's developmental milestones from ages 2 to 7 years, What's My Child Thinking? covers important issues, such as temper tantrums, friendships (real and imaginary), sibling rivalry, aggressive behaviour, and peer pressure。 There's also a bank of practical "survival guides" for critical times, such as travelling in the car, eating out, and going online safely。 Rooted in evidence-based clinical psychology and championing positive parenting, What's My Child Thinking? will help you tune in to your child's innermost thoughts and be the parent you want to be。I am ambivalent in my feelings about this book - in some ways this book is helpful and in others, not。 Parenting should be more intuitive as no child is like another: some suggestions in here may work for your child, some may do nothing as they are not exactly like this model child in the book。 I think that this plays into the helicopter parenting model - parenting should feel more true and "organic" (I hate that word!) 。。but if you like self-help books that may be a good read for you。 Ergo I am giving it a middle of the road 3 stars。tttNOTE: I cannot link this review to LinkedIn - there is something wrong with the linking/programming and it will not happen。 。。。more

I've read a TON of parenting books。 I really enjoyed this one。 It was extremely informative and easy to read。 I like that if I need a little refresher on something, it's super easy to find in the chapter outline。 I've read a TON of parenting books。 I really enjoyed this one。 It was extremely informative and easy to read。 I like that if I need a little refresher on something, it's super easy to find in the chapter outline。 。。。more
